up. >> and we are already seeing pretty big delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is unusual. metering lights turned on ahead of schedule. we'll tell you why coming up. >> good morning. it is monday, november 5. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. breaking news in fremont. >> a major street blocked after a deadly police shooting this morning. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington explains the shooting began with a domestic violence call. she has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. central avenue is closed while police investigate this officer- involved shooting and you can't see the house where this happened, but if you look down central avenue where those flashing lights are, that's where police killed a man late last night when responding to a domestic violence call. it happened on the 4500 block of central avenue in fremont. a woman called 911 at around 11:00 saying her roommate was being attacked. when police arrived, it was quite a dramatic scene. a woman came running out of the house. behind her, her estranged

husband. he was naked and chasing her with a knife. >> officers arrived and found a female later identified as our victim running out of the unit with her husband pursuing her. he was naked with a knife in his hand. officers demanded that the suspect stop, drop his weapon. when he refused to do so, officers fired their weapons. >> reporter: the two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave and we know that the mandied was a 37- year-old from san jose. one of the officers has been with the police department more than 20 years. the other is a three-year veteran. there are still a lot of unanswered questions this morning. we do not know why that man was naked, what provoked the attack, and what he was doing here in the first place. we know his wife was staying in this house with a roommate. the public information officer with fremont police says she believes this is the first officer-involved shooting of

the year. this morning, central avenue is closed from glenmore drive. in fremont, elissa harrington, cbs 5. it's the final day of campaigning for the two major presidential candidates. almost to the finish line. both men are hitting that important battleground state of ohio today. the "associated press" says it appears president obama has an edge toward the 270 electoral votes needed to win. it will likely come down to these six swing states represented by 83 electoral votes. here that talk about that susan mcginnis with a look at where the campaign trail leads on this election eve. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those swing states are what this whole thing is about in these last final days. final day now of course ohio is really in the spotlight today. this is "the" last day, election eve, for these two candidates to get their message out, squeeze hands, attack one another, air those ads, because after today, it's all up to the voters. reporter: president obama

to three degrees above the record highs. 81 in san francisco, 83 in san jose. more on your weather coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks. if you are coming into san francisco, you may want to avoid 101. this is the problem northbound 101 right before candlestick. we have an accident there truck slammed into the back of a garbage truck. the garbage truck caught fire. the bottom corner of your screen you will see flashing lights where they still have two lanes blocked off a lot of emergency crews are on scene. we are seeing brake lights as far back as sierra point parkway. it's growing because of blocked lanes. use 280 to get into san francisco. we are also seeing unusual heavy traffic now approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights were turned on anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes earlier than we typically see them turned on. there was a stall on the "s" curve before treasure island. this is going to take a long time to recover even though the

stall is cleared. it's jammed up toward the overcrossings. back to you guys. >> thank you. new this morning, a fire rips through a nail salon at a strip mall in pleasant hill. there are suspicions it was arson. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us what investigators found and what they are saying. >> reporter: they are looking into that now. investigators are still in here trying to comb through that salon with i believe it was called a hydrocarbon device to check for any accelerants in the salon. this is what firefighters saw when they got here. a molotov cocktail or homemade bomb was found. the fire was confined to that one business. but they don't know what sparked the blaze. >> when firefighters first arrived they found the front window of the business broken

open with heavy black smoke coming out and localized fire they put out quickly with no obvious signs of how the fire may have started. so closed business in the middle of the night that in itself you know you have to consider that it may be suspicious. >> reporter: contra costa fire protection district says they got the call actually around 11:38 last night and no one was around when it started so no one was injured and it only took them about 20 minutes to put it out. again, you see that inspector still here really combing through to see how this began. it's an ongoing investigation here since midnight expected to be here until he is able to collect enough samples for evaluation and then we can learn more about how this whole thing began in the first place. live in pleasant hill, cate caugiran, cbs 5. 7 people are safe and sound after their boat capsized off the marin county coast.

four adults and three kids were on the 25-foot pleasure craft when it overturned yesterday afternoon near the mouth of tomales bay. rescuers had to cut a hole in the hull to pull out two kids trapped underneath. two others were rescued from the water by helicopter while the other three made it to shore on their own. no one was wearing a life jacket. it's unclear what caused the boat to capsize but the coast guard says weather was in the a factor. okay, michelle. 6:11. today is the second day of a strike against raley's in northern california and nevada. it happened after contract talks broke off yesterday. issues are medical benefits, elimination of premium pay for working sundays, and a proposed pay freeze. this is the first strike in the 77-year history of the company. time now 6:12. why notorious mobster whitey bulger was rushed to the hospital. >> a tragedy at a zoo.

bet in the meantime because again we are seeing delays as far back as oyster point. that's the latest word. elsewhere towards the bay bridge, busy morning already at the bay bridge. we had that stall a while ago. it was reported about a half hour ago or even more. they cleared it quickly. unfortunately, we are still seeing good size delays we had to turn on the metering lights a half hour ahead of schedule so it's already jamming up towards the macarthur maze. bay bridge, it's going to take a while for this one to calm down. in the meantime good brake lights all the way through the incline section of the span. elsewhere westbound 580 drive time in the red. so it is a 27-minute commute between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. this is just kind of your typical stuff. we had an earlier fender-bender approaching the dublin interchange. it's long since cleared. it was cleared to the center divide. pretty shortly thereafter. a look at the golden gate bridge things are flowing nicely from marin towards doyle

drive in san francisco. here's lawrence with the forecast. >> what a weekend it was. lots of sunshine around the bay area today. we are looking at the possibility of some record- breaking heat outside. mostly clear around the bay area to start out the day although we have a couple of patches of ground fog in the north bay valleys. by the afternoon, high pressure some offshore winds cranking those temperatures up to record levels but some major changes happening as we get toward the latter part of the week maybe some rain or snow in the local mountains. so enjoy the weather while we have it. lots of sunshine for today as a strong ridge sits overhead. likely going to see some of those records toward the afternoon just about everywhere you go around the bay area today. those records probably a good 2 to 3 degrees above previous records from this date. temperatures at sfo 81, great day in and out of san francisco. around the country, though, couple of trouble spots. houston thunderstorms there about 82 degrees. partly cloudy into denver at 64. showers possible into chicago 45 and 46 degrees and partly cloudy in new york. around the bay we are expecting these highs soaring to 83

degrees in san jose. how about the coastline? 70s even some 80s into half moon bay. east bay temperatures maybe some mid-80s in the warmest spots about 82 in the napa valley and inside the bay we'll see those temperatures up in the 70s and 80s. so really spectacular record- breaking weather today. by thursday and friday chance of showers and cold enough to see some snow on our local mountaintops. what a week it's going to be in weather. back to you guys. a young boy fell into an exhibit in a pittsburgh zoo. it was full of wild dogs and the dogs attacked the boy. investigators are trying to determine if the victim died from the fall or going to attack. a gangster is being treated at a hospital this morning. massachusetts officials say james whitey bulger was taken

to boston medical after the 83- year-old complained of chest pains yesterday. no details on his condition have been released. bulger is in prison while awaiting trial on allegations that he played a role in 19 murders. 6:20 now. in this morning's healthwatch, limiting the amount of time of children spend watching tv could help bring more families back to the dinner table. a new study in the journal of pediatrics looked at two groups of parents, those who were counseled about reducing tv time ate fewer meals in front of the tv. researchers also say children who eat while watching tv tend to eat larger portions and less healthy foods, as well. and new studies are confirming that americans need to cut down on sodium. a new review backs up the american heart association's recommendations to limit salt to less than 1500 milligrams a day. numbers show most people consume more than twice that amount. doctors say less salt can cut the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. sometimes you don't know the foods it's in. you might be surpriseed.

a few minutes. in other news, new this morning a fire gutting a nail salon at a strip mall in pleasant hill and there are signs it was not an accident too. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the scene to tell us why investigators are calling this suspicious. >> reporter: it's because of what they found when they first got on scene and now this investigator has been here since midnight. for hours combing through this area, they are trying to figure out what happened. look at this video. this is what firefighters saw when they first got on scene. a molotov cocktail or makeshift bomb. the investigator i spoke to says they aren't sure if that's what started this fire but right now, he has been looking through the rubble for more evidence. now, this investigator says he was able to pinpoint where the fire started in the salon and earlier was using a hydrocarbon detector to sort of see exactly if there are any accelerants in there to bring back to the lab. it's what firefighters found

us and what a day it's going to be today. lots of sunshine as we have mostly clear skies. the one exception in the north bay valleys we are seeing patchy ground fog but the offshore winds are in place and that's going to crank these temperatures up outside. in fact, it looks like as we head throughout the day today these numbers probably headed up into record-breaking territory. out over the bay clear as we speak. i think these temperatures fairly cool in the north bay early on. some of those numbers down into the 40s but already looking at 60 degrees in san francisco. 57 degrees in oakland. so we are headed up from here. warm temperatures likely going to records broken all around the bay area today. the previous records, 70s and some 80s. we'll probably be about 2 to 3 degrees above that this afternoon. 84 redwood city. 83 in san jose. but... there are some major changes, some rain, maybe even some snow in the local hills coming up too. so it's going to be a wild week of weather, elizabeth. >> a little midweek surprise. thanks, lawrence. what a difference 10 minutes

makes. it is now free and clear past the candlestick area and 101. look at this. all lanes reopened about 10 minutes ago on northbound 101 on the approach to candlestick. since about 5:00 this morning we were watching lanes blocked after a car hit a garbage truck. there was a fire. anyway, we are still seeing a few brake lights in the area. it's still slow from south city but things looking a lot better already. in the meantime, out towards the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights were turned on before 6:00 this morning so that's way ahead of schedule. it was all because of one little stall on that incline section on the approach to the "s" curve so unfortunately we are probably going to be left with a good sized backup for the commute. it's stacked up through the macarthur maze for the last 10 or 15 minutes. that is your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. we are going to get back to our top story. we had a little trouble with it earlier. a deadly police shooting in fremont. cbs 5 reporter elissa

harrington is live with this bizarre confrontation. elissa. >> reporter: very bizarre. first a traffic update because police just opened up eastbound lanes on central avenue westbound lanes remaining closed from glenmore to logan drive. this is where police shot and killed a man who was chasing his wife naked with a knife. we don't know why he was naked or what caused him to chase his wife but we know that the pair were estranged. she was staying at home or living with a roommate. her husband came over sometime yesterday and at 11:00 the roommate called 911. she told them the man was attack be his wife. when officers showed up the woman ran from the home her husband chasing her. police ordered him to stop, drop his weapon but he wouldn't so they shot him. the 37-year-old man from san jose was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> you know, we're very lucky that she was able to get away. it happened so quickly. and she was able to get out of that unit. officers arrived at the exact

have and keep the medical that we have with the union but they want to take that away. basically when we retire they probably -- we would have no medical. >> raley's says it needs to cut costs because of a growing number of stores selling groceries. this is the first strike in the 7 7-year history of raley's. construction of the santa clara 49ers football stadium is set to hit another significant milestone today. it's going up in a hurry. crews now scheduled to install the first of more than 2,000 concrete sections. they will be used for the risers, the walls and about 10,000 steps for seating. if all goes according to plan the 49ers will be able to start playing in the silicon valley in 2014. and right now, it is moving along rather quickly. >> it is. 6:41. it's going to be a nail-biter finish. what could happen in california classrooms if prop 30 fails. >> it was a storm that devastated the eastern seaboard. how sandy could boost the

and a change in voter registration in california d can you believe in? we are just 24 hours until election day. >> we have been waiting for this for a long time. and a change in voter registration in california could make a difference in a key race. melissa griffin joins us this more from the "san francisco examiner" to discuss it. >> good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> good to see you. >> reporter: glad to be back at the grownup's table. [ laughter ] >> does either party benefit from this new registration?

>> reporter: this year for the first time californians can register to vote online. and as you might imagine, the sorts of people who will register online will be under 35, estimates are that up to 60% of the million new online voters are under the age of 35. and that does tend to benefit the democratic party. the democrats just generally whether online or regular clipboards outside of the grocery stores have enjoyed a last-minute surge in voter registration here. there are 44% of californians as democrats, 29% republican and everybody else is either declined to state or independent party or -- >> or moved out of the state. >> gone to nevada. [ laughter ] >> does it mean a lot? this is a democratic state anyway. >> reporter: the presidential race won't be affected or the senate races.

but prop 30 governor brown's tax proposition is really in peril. 48% in some polls, 52% in other polls. kind of hanging on by a thread. democrats home this last-minute surge in registered voters will result inputting prop 30 over the top. now, of course, that means that these young voters have to do more than register. they have to vote. so we'll see how that works out. >> it's close. what if it fails? governor brown says he has these trigger cuts and it go will after education. will he do it? >> reporter: exactly. so everyone should understand that these trigger cuts to education are a legislative creation. there's nothing in the budget process that should put our deficit on education. this is specifically done to scare people into voting for prop 30. in order for it to works the governor has to convince people that the cuts are inevitable. he has said he will veto any attempts to change or to cut back on these trigger cuts. having said that, democrats

will tell you kind of off the record that they don't really expect that this powerful teachers union in the state are going to go for those cuts. we could city lawsuits trying to stop those cuts. ranking republicans last week sent a letter to education officials saying when you get back, let's get the quote there, we want to work across the aisle to repeal the proposed trigger cuts as soon as the legislature reconvenes. so regardless he could see a two-thirds majority in the legislature overturning or cutting back on those trigger cuts. >> is there any precedent for reversing these trigger cuts? this year it was supposed to have $4 billion in health and human services. the legislature made less than half the cuts and pushed the rest of the deficit on the next year's budgetary cycle. trigger cuts before haven't panned out. [ chanting ] >> are you ready for this to end? with all the campaigning and the mudslinging and all that

stuff, it's time to get to work. >> reporter: i love this stuff. but even i'm a little -- i feel like a lot of companionship with the little girl who is crying about barack obama. the financial crisis in greece. ashley morrison is with us this morning from cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank and michelle. investors overseas waited on the sidelines ahead of the u.s. presidential election. in asia tokyo's nikkei dipped half a percent this morning while hong kong's hang seng also lost half a percent. many investors are also staying on the sidelines on wall street this morning ahead of the u.s. presidential election. tomorrow everybody just waiting to see the outcome before making any big trading moves. let's head down to wall street where as you can see, the dow has been bouncing back and forth now down by 35 points. the nasdaq is also in lower territory. we're in positive territory a few minutes ago but just down by 2 so far this morning. while sandy is shaping up to be the second costliest storm in u.s. history, the price of rebuilding could actually boost the economy. some economists say we might see a lift in the first months of 2013 as construction workers are hired to rebuild damaged

buildings, roads and bridges. increases in construction often lead to boosts in other industries including architecture, real estate and retail sales. economists say there could be a bump in auto manufacturing due to the number of cars lost in the storm. i'm not sure if you guys have seen all the video of course of all the cars that are tossed around covered with sand and it's been quite a mess there, flooded, so yeah, something positive through all this destruction maybe some jobs. >> yeah. i know. well, we'll see. ashley, thank you so much. >> thank you, ashley. time now for weather. and i have to tell you, lawrence, yesterday it was spectacular. and i guess today a carbon copy, huh? >> maybe warmer outside, lots of sunshine as high pressure sits overhead. offshore winds continuing to blow so mostly clear start to the morning. the one exception we have a couple of patches of fog showing up in the north bay valleys but looking good over russian hill toward the golden gate bridge. and it's going to stay that way all day long. it looks like that ridge is going to crank these temperatures up today as we are going to see some record-

breaking temperatures in many spots. but then some major changes as we head toward the latter part of the week. maybe even a return to some snow on our local mountaintops. so enjoy the sunshine while we have it. that strong ridge in place now with those offshore winds going to bring those record-breaking temperatures and maybe even tomorrow we could see a few more records. numbers around the state looking like this. 80s into the central valley, about 79 degrees in yosemite, 84 into monterey bay. temperatures in the santa clara valley 83 in san jose, 84 morgan hill, how about the beaches? 70s and 80s at the coastline. east bay numbers up in the mid- 80s in some of the warmest spots and inside the bay could get as high as 81 degrees today in san francisco. looking out over the next couple of days, beautiful weather, record-breaking temperatures. big cooldown on wednesday. by thursday and friday, chance of showers, maybe even some snow over the mountain thomas. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> major changes. thank you, lawrence. let's go out live towards the san mateo bridge. you may want to consider the san mateo bridge this morning because the bay bridge is super backed up. they turned the metering lights

on really early this morning because of a stall. so it's still backed up towards the macarthur maze. on the maps show you what else is going on across the bay area, westbound 237 is actually a good commute no delay at all leaving milpitas towards san jose. if your commute takes you through san jose northbound 101 approaching julian and mckee road, we have an accident there just cleared to the center divide. unfortunately, we still have some brake lights so yeah, all your drive times for the south bay now unfortunately in the yellow. so we are seeing delays 101, 280 through downtown san jose, and coming up the guadalupe parkway. so 280 and 87 that's just kind of your usual brake lights through the stretch. much better news now. northbound 101 through candlestick, gosh, half hour ago this camera looks a whole lot different. we had brake lights from south city but once again that traffic alert has been canceled. all lanes back open after that earlier crash. we'll have a check of your top stories right after this break.

investigation. office part of westbound central avenue in fremont closed this morning for a police investigation. officers got a call about a san jose man attacking his estranged wife with a knife in a fremont apartment. they found the man naked chasing his wife still holding that knife. he refused orders to stop and police shot and killed him. investigators are also calling a fire at a nail salon in pleasant hill suspicious. overnight they found an unexploded molotov cocktail on the scene. the fire gutted the salon at a strip mall on contra costa boulevard. firefighters put it out in 20 minutes. nobody was hurt. president obama and mitt romney are hitting the campaign trail hard on this final day before the election. a reminder polls in california
